Andy Rooney was an Emmy and Writers Guild Award-winning author, journalist and TV personality best known for his “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney” segments on 60 Minutes. From behind a walnut table he hand-crafted, Rooney delivered his blunt satirical views of everyday events and themes directly to the camera, creating a #stout new reporting format that got viewers involved in the issue.
Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, Rooney wrote for the Stars and Stripes. One of the first American journalists to arrive at and write about the German concentration camps, Rooney later noted later the profound effect the experience had on shaping him as a writer and reporter.
After the war, Rooney worked as a freelancer before nabbing a spot writing for successful on-air personality Arthur Godfrey, whose mentorship played an key role in Rooney’s climb to success in radio and television production.
