INSPIRATION

R. Buckminster Fuller was a renowned inventor and visionary who was known as a ‘comprehensive anticipatory design scientist.’ He spent his life working across multiple fields in his pursuit to solve global problems surrounding housing, shelter, transportation, education, energy, ecological destruction, and poverty and make the world work for 100% of humanity.

Fuller was renowned for his pioneering solutions that reflected the potential of innovative design to create technology that does “more with less”. Throughout the course of his life Fuller held 28 patents (including his famous geodesic dome), authored 28 books and received 47 honorary degrees. But his lasting impact on the world today can be found in his influence on generations of designers, architects, scientists and artists working to create a more sustainable planet.

Appointed a Distinguished Scientist at the United States Institute of Behavioral Research, Fuller has been hailed as “one of the greatest minds of our times” in part for his exhilarating belief that for the first time in history, man has reached the ability to play a conscious, active role in his own evolution, and therefore to make himself a complete success in his environment.

Don’t fight forces, use them.

ACTION

Use What You Already Have…
Take stock of where you are, assets on hand, solutions already tried or in place- even if they are not working “as is” you may be able to re-use them. (Use these great takeaways on Doing More With Less from Stout panelist Scott Sonenshein author of Stretch)

…But Don’t Let The Status Quo Limit You
Fuller firmly believed “People should think things out fresh and not just accept the conventional way of doing things.”
Don’t just step off the path in a new direction- go back to the beginning and see how you can build new better path. After you have a new plan clearly defined, look at existing assets from step one to determine how they can help build it.

Challenge Fear of Difference
Change is hard. Fighting the “powers that be” and the “It’s always been done this way” may be the hardest challenge you face when proposing a completely out-of-the-box solution. Build a solid plan, using some familiar current elements and move forward-change=innovation=success!
