Honoring An All Star Athlete

#stoutSHOUT to Simone Biles, Olympic Medalist and the most decorated gymnast in world championships history, on being named the 2019 Team USA Female Olympic Athlete of the Year

Simone Biles performs her signature triple double on floor exercise.

From A Tough Start…

Biles’ mother struggled with substance abuse on and off, and Biles spent time in the foster system at before she was adopted at age three by her grandparents in Houston. She discovered gymnastics by accident at age 6 (a coach spotted her copying moves on a daycare field trip) and so began the story of a rising star.

“To go out there and prove what I can do has taught me a lot about who I am.”
— Simone Biles

…To A Champion To Flip For

At 22 Simone Biles became the most decorated gymnast in world championships history. She is the first African-American person to be a world all-around champion, the second woman in history to win three consecutive world titles and holds the most World medals (25) and World gold medals (19) of any gender. She is also the female gymnast with the most World all-around titles (5), the sixth woman to win an individual all-around title at both the World Championships and the Olympics, and the first gymnast since Lilia Podkopayeva in 1996 to hold both titles simultaneously.

#StoutMove: Turning A Difference Into An Advantage

Biles talks often about how she used to feel self-conscious about how different her build is from many gymnasts, until she discovered how that difference gave her a unique strength that contributed to her ability to create several new moves that now bear “The Biles” name. That kind of body positivity in a teenage girl is something the world needs in greater abundance!
